Reality Check
I've been reading a log of blogs and have seen that a lot of people are upset with Obama's vote on the FISA bill. I am surprised at how easily people's alliances shift, and think that people need to be reminded that there is no such thing as a perfect candidate, and if you believed that you (Obama voters) were going to agree with everything Obama does, then you’ve put him on a pedestal that no one can live up to.
We have had to put up with a President that has ignored the will of the people for 7 years now, and has refused to even acknowledge criticisms directed to his administration. Obama on the other hand, cast his vote and acknowledging the concern of his supporters, explained why he decided to vote the way that he did.
I myself was initially disappointed, but after reviewing the bill itself and his reasoning, I am comfortable with how he voted. The bill is by no means perfect but is far better than illegal wire taps with no oversight whatsoever.
I think most people are upset about the retroactive immunity, but we need to be realistic about that as well. No civil suit would have been successful because the Republicans would have seen to it that any evidence needed to prove a civil suit would have been classified for national security reasons. Even if civil suits were successful, ultimately we would flip the bill anyways (higher cell phone bills). And this immunity only applies to civil cases not to criminal. If Obama gets in the White House, hearings can be held and if the law was violated, people can be tried in criminal court without Bush being able to pardon those responsible.
That being said, I just think people need to stop and think before jumping across the aisle just because you’re not getting everything that you want. Especially since your alternatives are far worse (Mccain? Seriously?).
